Sciatica
Sciatica is caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, which can occur with several conditions. The 3 that Osteopaths most commonly see are:
- Sprained facet joint in the lower back
- Disc herniation also known as a disc bulge, disc prolapse, ruptured disc or slipped disc
- Piriformis syndrome tightness in the piriformis muscle in the hip
Getting a correct diagnosis of what is causing sciatica is the most critical aspect of effective treatment. Osteopaths are highly trained health professionals with excellent diagnostic skills – we won’t treat you unless we have a clear diagnosis and plan.
Treatment by an Osteopath aims to reduce muscle spasm of the supporting lumbar and deep buttock muscles, as well as increasing joint movement with gentle manipulation and stretching of the affected areas.
