What is Pilates?
Pilates is a strength based exercise program with a focus on control, using correct muscle activation. Pilates exercises concentrate on the deep muscles that are required to stabilise the body during an exercise, commonly referred to as the “core.” Pilates movements are more flowing than typical weight based strength exercises and have a strong emphasis on correct posture.
Both the larger and smaller muscle groups of the body are targeted during Pilates exercises, which play an important role in joint stability and improving muscular imbalances.
Pilates exercises are low impact and are effective in increasing whole body strength and flexibility. The initial focus lies in improving core activation and stability, progressing to become more dynamic and functional order to maintain stability, whilst using larger muscle groups.
