On average, about half of all reported severe headaches are migraines. They usually involve an intense throbbing pain on one side of the head, with other symptoms such as nausea being common. Many migraine sufferers don’t realise that osteopathic treatment can often help relieve these debilitating symptoms.
What exactly occurs in the head to cause a migraine is still not completely understood, but the current theory is that it is caused by a combination of changes in the nerves and blood vessels in the head.
The neck muscles and joints can contribute to a migraine when they are tight or not moving properly, because they irritate the nerves that travel into the head.
Osteopathic treatment can help with migraines by relaxing the neck and allowing the nerves and blood vessels to function properly. We have had great success with treating migraines this way!
These are some other causes of migraines that we will also consider when diagnosing:
- Hormone changes
- Sleeping problems
